The stocks had more functions. The stationary version was most commonly placed in the city square, where the offender was placed to suffer the dismay of the public, had he (or she) transgressed the rules of law ( or of the church, where there were any difference ), and most often was the target of a variety of missiles thrown at them, ranging from tomatoes, over (more or less) rotten eggs, to things less fragile.
