Spreader-bar at 15€/$ ?
Yes, it's an actual possibility
The trick is, that you'll have to accept, that it's not entirely straight...

If you're guessing, that I'm referring to a handlebar i.e. for a mountain bike,
you're absolutely right. The point is, that they come at a reasonable price,
they are light and sturdy build, and have a length, which will suit most
purposes.
All depending upon what handlebar you buy, and from whom, you might need to
use a piece of sanding paper, at the ends, to remove any sharp edges or the
like, which might otherwise ruin your rope, but apart from this, you'll get a
rather nice spreader bar from app. 14€/$ i.e. at THansen,
and to add to the fun, you can even get it in 'shiny' aluminum, in shiny black,
or in matt black - to suit your preferences..!
PS: Don't forget to make sure, that it'll stand
up to the challenges, that you are planning to put it through, prior to
applying it to BDSM...
Spreader-bar at 30€/$ ?
and then completely straight, and with an easy-to-attach-to ring at either
end..!
This version will give you a little more work to do, but nothing more than
the average 'handyman' can cope with.
MATERIALS: What you'll need for 2 spreaderbars. The images are links
to where I found it.
- 2 pieces of 3/4" waterpipe, app. 1 meter long (3 feet)
at 117,95 DKK each (app. 16$).
- 4 end caps, 3/4" (same as the pipes, of course)
at 21,95 DKK each (app. 3$)
- 4 allen screws 8 x 30 mm (5/16" x 1")
at 12,90 DKK for a pack of 10 screws (app 1.75$)
- 4 hex nuts, same size as the screws
at 22,90 DKK for 10 nuts (app 3$)
- 4 lifting eyes, same threading as the screws (I used an M8)
at 39,90 DKK for a pack of 4 (app 5½$)
- (Optional) A can of Hammerlak (Paint for metal)
at 69,90 DKK (app. 9½$)
This will end up in a budget of 399,40 DKK (app. 54$) - or 469,30 DKK (app.
63$) if you want to paint it, to get an 'S&M-finish' to it...
TOOLS: you'll need
- A hammer
- A punch
- An electric drill
- An 8mm drill (or whatever size of screw you choose)
- A drill ½ the size of the one above
- An allen key
- A wrench
- A set of pliers
- A vice
- A file
HOW TO DO IT:
- Put an end cap in the vice

- Mark for a hole, in the center of the end cap

- Drill a 4mm hole through the end cap

- Drill an 8 mm hole through the end cap

- File away any sharp edges, or use a relevant tool to do it (as I do)

- Repeat 1/ - 5/ for the next 3 end caps
- Put the allen key in the vice, so that the short end is pointing upwards

- Place a screw on the allen key
- Mount a nut on the screw

- Place an end cap over the screw

- Screw a lifting eye onto the screw, and tighten it. Take care that the end
of the screw does not 'peek out' - if it does, or if it's too short, adjust
it by screwing the nut underneath up/down.

- Repeat 8/ - 11/ with the next 3 sets
- Put the one pipe in the vice

- Mount an end cap to the threading on the pipe, and turn the pipe, to mount
an end cap to the other end of the pipe, the same way

- Tighten the jaws of the vice around one of the end caps, and tighten both
end caps, by turning the other end cap clockwise (as hard as you can)

- Now you'll probably find, that the eyes are not aligned. if this is so,
you tighten one lifting eye into the jaws of the vice, and turn the other
lifting eye clockvise until they're properly aligned

(if you're unable to turn the lifting eye in this manner, you might have to
loosen one of the nuts a tiny bit)
- Repeat 13/ - 16/ with the other pice of pipe
- (Optional) if you'd like another finish to the project, apply a layer of
paint, or whatever you like...
What they look like, before being painted,
-and after having received a layer of black paint
-
and here you see them put to good use..*SS*
And then, an addition:
As my sponsor would like to have a ring, to hang the spreaderbar, i.e. from
the ceiling...
MATERIALS: What you'll need
- 2 boat-rings
at 29,90 DKK each (app 4$)
- 2 nuts
at 16,90 DKK for a pack of 10 (app 2,25$)
TOOLS: you'll need
- A hammer
- A punch
- An electric drill
- An 4mm drill
- An 6mm drill
- An 9,5mm drill
- An allen key
- A vice
- A hack saw
- A file
HOW TO DO IT:
- Put the allen key in the vice

- Mark the points, at which the spreaderbars balance on the allen key
- Put a spreader bar into the vice
- Drill a 4mm hole all the way through the spreader bar, where you
have the balancing mark
- Drill a 6mm hole through one side of the pipe
- Turn the pipe 180°, so that the remaining 4mm hole is up
- Drill a 9,5mm hole through one side of the pipe
- Repeat 3/ to 7/ with the other pipe
- Remove nuts and washers from the two boat rings
- Put a boat ring in the vice

- Measure exactly 20mm threading, from the eye

- Put a nut on the threading, on 'the inside' of where you'll be cutting

- Cut away the surplus threading

- Turn the bolt, so that you have it 'end up'

- File off the sharp edges, screw the nut 'almost off', and then down again,
and file the edge

- Remove the nut from the bolt
- Repeat 10/ to 16/ with the other boat ring
- Put a boat ring in the vice, end upwards

- Place a spreaderbar-pipe over the threading, in such a manner, that you
have the 6mm hole downwards and the 9,5mm hole facing upwards

- Screw the nut onto the threading (inside the pipe)

- Tighten the nut with the allen key

- Now the nut keeps the eyebolt (and the attached ring) in place

(as you see, when I turn the spreaderbar)

- Repeat 18/ to 22/ with the other pipe
