Spreader-bar at 15€/$ ?

Yes, it's an actual possibility

The trick is, that you'll have to accept, that it's not entirely straight...

If you're guessing, that I'm referring to a handlebar i.e. for a mountain bike, you're absolutely right. The point is, that they come at a reasonable price, they are light and sturdy build, and have a length, which will suit most purposes.

All depending upon what handlebar you buy, and from whom, you might need to use a piece of sanding paper, at the ends, to remove any sharp edges or the like, which might otherwise ruin your rope, but apart from this, you'll get a rather nice spreader bar from app. 14€/$ i.e. at  THansen, and to add to the fun, you can even get it in 'shiny' aluminum, in shiny black, or in matt black - to suit your preferences..!

PS: Don't forget to make sure, that it'll stand up to the challenges, that you are planning to put it through, prior to applying it to BDSM...

Spreader-bar at 30€/$ ?

and then completely straight, and with an easy-to-attach-to ring at either end..!

This version will give you a little more work to do, but nothing more than the average 'handyman' can cope with.

MATERIALS: What you'll need for 2 spreaderbars. The images are links to where I found it.

  1. 2 pieces of 3/4" waterpipe, app. 1 meter long (3 feet) pipe at 117,95 DKK each (app. 16$).
  2. 4 end caps, 3/4" (same as the pipes, of course) end cap at 21,95 DKK each (app. 3$)
  3. 4 allen screws 8 x 30 mm (5/16" x 1") allen screw at 12,90 DKK for a pack of 10 screws (app 1.75$)
  4. 4 hex nuts, same size as the screws hex nut at 22,90 DKK for 10 nuts (app 3$)
  5. 4 lifting eyes, same threading as the screws (I used an M8) lifting eye at 39,90 DKK for a pack of 4 (app 5½$)
  6. (Optional) A can of Hammerlak (Paint for metal) Hammerlak (paint) at 69,90 DKK (app. 9½$)

This will end up in a budget of 399,40 DKK (app. 54$) - or 469,30 DKK (app. 63$) if you want to paint it, to get an 'S&M-finish' to it...

TOOLS: you'll need

HOW TO DO IT:

  1. Put an end cap in the vice
    end cap in vice
  2. Mark for a hole, in the center of the end cap
    marking for the hole
  3. Drill a 4mm hole through the end cap
    drilling the small hole
  4. Drill an 8 mm hole through the end cap
    drilling the final hole
  5. File away any sharp edges, or use a relevant tool to do it (as I do)
    removing sharp edges
  6. Repeat 1/ - 5/ for the next 3 end caps
  7. Put the allen key in the vice, so that the short end is pointing upwards
    allen key in vice
  8. Place a screw on the allen key
  9. Mount a nut on the screw
allen screw with nut on allen key
  10. Place an end cap over the screw
    end cap on screw
  11. Screw a lifting eye onto the screw, and tighten it. Take care that the end of the screw does not 'peek out' - if it does, or if it's too short, adjust it by screwing the nut underneath up/down.
lifting eye on screw  tightening the lifting eye onto the screw
  12. Repeat 8/ - 11/ with the next 3 sets
  13. Put the one pipe in the vice
    pipe in vice
  14. Mount an end cap to the threading on the pipe, and turn the pipe, to mount an end cap to the other end of the pipe, the same way
end cap assembly, ready for mounting  mounting the end cap assembly
  15. Tighten the jaws of the vice around one of the end caps, and tighten both end caps, by turning the other end cap clockwise (as hard as you can)
end cap assembly in vice  pipe ready for tightening end of caps  tightening the end caps
  16. Now you'll probably find, that the eyes are not aligned. if this is so, you tighten one lifting eye into the jaws of the vice, and turn the other lifting eye clockvise until they're properly aligned
lifting eye in vice  pipe ready to adjust eye-alignment  aligning the lifting eyes
(if you're unable to turn the lifting eye in this manner, you might have to loosen one of the nuts a tiny bit)
  17. Repeat 13/ - 16/ with the other pice of pipe
  18. (Optional) if you'd like another finish to the project, apply a layer of paint, or whatever you like...

And then, an addition:

As my sponsor would like to have a ring, to hang the spreaderbar, i.e. from the ceiling...

MATERIALS: What you'll need

  1. 2 boat-rings boat ring at 29,90 DKK each (app 4$)
  2. 2 nuts nut at 16,90 DKK for a pack of 10 (app 2,25$)

TOOLS: you'll need

HOW TO DO IT:

  1. Put the allen key in the vice
    balancing the spreaderbar
  2. Mark the points, at which the spreaderbars balance on the allen key
  3. Put a spreader bar into the vice
  4. Drill a 4mm hole all the way through the spreader bar, where you have the balancing mark
  5. Drill a 6mm hole through one side of the pipe
  6. Turn the pipe 180°, so that the remaining 4mm hole is up
  7. Drill a 9,5mm hole through one side of the pipe
  8. Repeat 3/ to 7/ with the other pipe
  9. Remove nuts and washers from the two boat rings
  10. Put a boat ring in the vice
    boat ring in vice
  11. Measure exactly 20mm threading, from the eye
    measuring the eyebolt
  12. Put a nut on the threading, on 'the inside' of where you'll be cutting
    nut placed on threading
  13. Cut away the surplus threading
    cutting the bolt
  14. Turn the bolt, so that you have it 'end up'
eyebolt with the cut end upwards
  15. File off the sharp edges, screw the nut 'almost off', and then down again, and file the edge
    Filing the cut bolt
  16. Remove the nut from the bolt
  17. Repeat 10/ to 16/ with the other boat ring
  18. Put a boat ring in the vice, end upwards
eyebolt in vice, threaded end upwards
  19. Place a spreaderbar-pipe over the threading, in such a manner, that you have the 6mm hole downwards and the 9,5mm hole facing upwards
    placing pipe on threading
  20. Screw the nut onto the threading (inside the pipe)
    nut on threading
  21. Tighten the nut with the allen key
    tightening the nut
  22. Now the nut keeps the eyebolt (and the attached ring) in place

(as you see, when I turn the spreaderbar)

  23. Repeat 18/ to 22/ with the other pipe
