"The Throne" was the name of this item. The hangman's assistant
would lock the offenders ankles into the openings at the top/back of the throne,
and leave the offender hanging from the ankles, with the head down - as the
torment with thumb-screws, glowing thongs and so on continued.
It was a common sight to have an offender hanging like this for 7-10 days non
stop.
